Terrell’s Story: Steps to a New Future for Teenagers

Terrell is a nice-looking 15-year-old with a glint in his eye and a quick wit. He comes across as sharp and interesting as he talks about his ideas and dreams. But that first impression is the tip of an iceberg that is much different beneath the surface.

If you ask about his plans for the future, he mumbles vaguely and changes the subject. When no one’s looking, a haunted expression dims his eyes as he warily surveys his surroundings, alert for where the next setback or threat will come from.

Terrell doesn’t willingly talk about his life, but if you spend time with him, he opens up a little. Enough to hear his dad was murdered and his mom battles drugs, which makes family finances a struggle and regular meals an uncertainty. He admits he smokes weed because it makes him feel better, and he wishes he had some of the things the dealers flash around.

I learn from others that Terrell is failing his classes in a failing high school, even though he seems smart enough. He wants to make something of himself, but he doesn’t know how, and he has few positive role models in his life nor anyone showing him how to live life better. Even though he dreams of a good future, he doesn’t know how to get there from here.

What Terrell doesn’t know—yet—is there are practical life skills he can learn to make positive progress while in high school and to not only survive but be successful. His life and future can be better, and he can get there one step at a time.
